Seamus the cat on a kayaking trip Seamus the cat and Colleen Teerling, cycling Seamus is an adventurous cat, 8 years old in 2014, who loves going on camping, bicycling and kayaking trips with his human, Colleen Teerling. He's been with her since he was a youngster of 8 months, and has travelled a lot with her as she doesn't like to leave him alone in a small apartment while she's away. He goes camping and hiking — 'just the two of us, 24 hours a day, alone in the wilderness', she says — and he absolutely loves kayaking and canoeing. The pair have done a lot of these activities in New Brunswick, Canada.

More recently Colleen and Seamus have moved to Maine, in the United States, and the cat has taken to accompanying her on bicycle trips. 'Most of the time he lounges in a small knapsack which I wear on my front,' says Colleen, 'but often he'll stand with his back paws in the pack and his front paws on the handlebars, whiskers blowing in the wind' (rather like the motor-cycling cats).

Our featured feline at the head of the page is Socks, pictured in 2003 surveying his 'estate' in the early morning sunshine. Affectionately known as Soxy, he blossomed from a thin and hungry stray into a substantial and handsome cat who loved life and company, and his gentle ways endeared him to many friends. He is now no longer with us, but you can read more from his human companion here.
